On «Tad's Chicken And Dumplins» at the Columbia Riverside Highway in Troutdale, OR

Johnson did what any fish-loving gent of loose morals looking to attract fellow rascals would do: He opened a roadhouse selling fresh, local seafood. In the ’40s, Tad’s moved to its current location and added a jukebox, dance floor, and—most importantly for its current legacy—chicken and dumplings.

In the summer, families flock to the lower dining room, enjoying the river breeze from the open windows over menu classics such as local salmon, liver and onions, and the iconic chicken and dumplings. Consisting of chicken stewed until tender in a rich duck-fat gravy and doughy dumplings cooked in chicken broth, the dish has earned its reputation. Light eaters be warned: The fluffy, biscuit-like dumplings are truly enormous.

China and US about to outline agreement to end trade war

As officials hold high level talks on Thursday and Friday in Washington, they remain far apart on demands made by U.S. President Donald Drumpf's administration for structural changes to China's economy.

Negotiators are drawing up six memorandums of understanding on structural issues: forced technology transfer and cyber theft, intellectual property rights, services, currency, agriculture and non-tariff barriers to trade, according to two sources familiar with the progress of the talks.

One source cautioned that the talks could still end in failure. But the work on the MOUs was a significant step in getting China to sign up both to broad principles and to specific commitments on key issues, he said.

Musk's SpaceX sends 60 satellites into space to develop "Starlink" internet connections

The second stage will see the satellites released one hour after launch, at an altitude of 270 miles (440 kilometers). They will then use their thrusters to take up position in a relatively low orbit of 340 miles (550 kilometers).

The satellites are designed to form the initial phase of a planned constellation capable of beaming signals for high-speed internet service from space to paying customers around the globe. Starlink will become operational once 800 satellites have been activated, which will require a dozen more launches.

Disaster aid bill caught in stalemate after GOP lawmaker demands unanimous consent request

“The people, particularly in Texas, but people generally, are tired of the swamp and this is a very swampy thing to do — have a vote on a Friday heading into Memorial Day weekend and after we recess, when we could have done our job yesterday when we had 435 members of Congress who should be here and should vote,” Roy said.
Ugh...
Because the House is in a pro forma session, the only option for quick passage was to obtain the unanimous consent of all House members. That didn’t happen.

Once signed, the disaster aid bill would provide billions of dollars to help Puerto Rico continue to recover from two deadly 2017 hurricanes as well as funding to help states and territories rebuild after a series of destructive storms and wildfires in 2018 and the first few months of 2019.

Trump pays soy bean farmers $16bn amid trade war tensions

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said that the first of three payments is likely to be made in July or August and suggested that the U.S. and China were unlikely to have settled their differences by then.

William Reinsch, a trade analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a former U.S. trade official, called the administration’s aid package for farmers “a fairly overt political ploy.”
Makes sense. First, you restrict trade for those who will always be hit hardest by such some political gameplay in which nothing is to be won by either side, and then, you bail the victims out as if you did them a favour, while you know you are the offender in the whole play. When will he ever learn that he can't win this war? The US have ceased to win wars since Vietnam and Korea.
Economists at the New York Federal Reserve, meanwhile, estimated the latest round of tariff hikes will cost the typical U.S. household $831 a year.

Architects and engineers seemingly confused about Trump's border wall plans

According to The Washington Post, among the changes Drumpf has ordered are that the metal bollards be painted a particular hue of black that absorbs heat to make them too hot to climb; the tips should be pointed to cause injury; and there should be fewer and smaller gates.

“But building high-rises in New York City is not the same as putting up a barrier at the border,” Lapan, now at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, told the publication. “You’re not looking for aesthetics; you’re looking for functionality.”
But aesthetics are the only thing in building and construction in general, and not even there, he excels with brilliance or actual knowledge, regarding the interior of his Penthouse suits in Trump towers. You know, the lavish, golden design that makes you vomit.

14-year old girl became latest alt-right star on Youtube

Users — and more importantly to YouTube, advertisers — have over the past year started to hold the platform accountable for enabling the exploitation of children and exposing them to disturbing content. But this video reveals an entirely different way the platform is harming kids: by letting them express extreme views in front of the entire world. This is what indoctrination looks like when it’s reflected back by the indoctrinated.
This is sick, simply sick...
Of course, it’s all presented in the terminally ironic style popularized by boundary-pushing comedy groups like the influential Million Dollar Extreme and adopted of late by white supremacist mass shooters in Christchurch and San Diego.
Assuming you can call shit like this comedy, which we finally have to cease. This is not comedy, this is spreading of hate, fearmongering, and inciting violence against minorities. To call it comedy is like surrendering to the ongoing threat of... show more

Farmer shows outstanding will to live by amputating own leg with pocketknife

Kaser, who was released from the rehabilitation center on Friday, replayed the whole harrowing ordeal for the ABC affiliate. He said he first got into the situation due to a split-second mistake while he was moving corn.
"Stepped into the hopper in the little hole. It just sucked my leg in and I was trying to pull it out, but it kept pulling," he said.

"He pretty much told me, his goal was, 'I need to get home and get back to what I was doing before,' and his main goal was farming," Willey told KETV.

In a statement to Independent.co.uk, McDonald’s spokesperson Wilhelm Baldia said the U.S. Consulate selected the fast-food company because of the "brand's great fame among Americans."

11-year old rape victim unable to receive abortion due to heartbeat bill

In an email to CBS News, the Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost defended the statute when asked if the law would apply in this circumstance. "Sometimes, the evolution of the law requires bold steps," Yost wrote. "In the last 46 years, the practice of medicine has changed. Science has changed. Even the point of viability has changed. Only the law has lagged behind."
It lacks behind right now. Ohio has gone back in time, especially in terms of women's suffrage. The relation to The Handmaid's Tale appears sadly apparent.

Rashida Tlaib (D - MI) makes equivocal statement about Palestine's role in Holocaust

"There’s always kind of a calming feeling when I think of the tragedy of the Holocaust, that it was my ancestors – Palestinians – who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity and their existence, in many ways, has been wiped out… in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-Holocaust, post-tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time. And I love the fact that it was my ancestors that provided that in many ways,” Tlaib said.

When asked about the two-state solution, Tlaib criticized Netanyahu and said she does not believe a two-state solution is currently possible because Netanyahu's doctrine prevents it. She added that the only way for a two-state solution to be possible today would be if Netanyahu "gets up tomorrow morning and decides: ‘I’m going to take down the walls, I’m not going to expand settlements, enough is enough.'"

No, man, it ain't funny to joke about shooting migrants

Kellyanne "Alternative Facts" Conway upset about Hillary Clinton's comments

“She lost that election fairly and squarely, and when she says that election was stolen from her to hoots and hollers from the audience, she’s playing a dangerous game,” Conway said. “Here she is two and half years later, literally will not accept the election results because she lost.”
And although Ms. Clinton has lost, the Senate, which is mainly occupied by Republicans, can't get off her emails, although Trump commits much higher fleonies. So, why bother about a comment she has made, not intending to let anything follow up beside this? Doesn't she have anything else to do in her WH job, combatting actual facts?

Trump pardons Army Ranger convicted for murdering Iraqi civilian

Because, why not? I mean, it's just a civilian, that's what we call a collateral damage. War is like this, so why should we sentence those murders? What should they have done? It could have happened to them as well if the civilian was only a civilian in disguise, immediately exploding him- or herself, and so, this soldier would've died instead. So, you'd better murder the civilian before the civilian murders you, right? This is how it goes, war always causes innocent deaths, we cannot prevent it.
(This was meant to be sarcasm, though. You cannot pardon murderers just because they wear a uniform. But what do you expect from the man who grants a golf player the highest decoration of your country, because he is befriended with you? He's a narcissist who digs upon the support of the simple-minded.)

DHS soon to begin examining migrants' DNA to investigate probable family relationships

DHS has repeatedly warned that children are being exploited by traffickers to skirt the nation’s immigration laws. Currently, the government can’t hold migrant children in detention for more than 20 days, often leading to the release of families — or groups posing as families — until their immigration court hearing, a practice President Donald Drumpf has derided as “catch and release.”

US send out naval ships in order to defend their ally in the Middle East

"In response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings, the United States is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the US Central Command region," Mr. Bolton said in a statement.

"The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces."
You brandmarked the IRGC a terrorist organisation, how aren't you about to march forward to war against Iran? This is typical warmongering at its finest, to deny it, on the other hand, is like calling your enemy dumb.
The statement did not specifically state why the deployment is taking place now, but it comes during a deadly escalation between Gaza-based Palestinian militants and Israel in which the two sides have traded a barrage of rocket fire and air strikes in recent days.

Describing the boy’s medical condition, the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the boy had “a severe infection in the frontal lobe that showed no improvement, even after a surgical intervention to stabilize the pressure inside the head area.”

NYT cartoonist seems to have further issues, blames Jewish propaganda machine for criticism

The calls of anti-Semitism were “made through the Jewish propaganda machine, which is, anytime there’s criticism it’s because there’s someone anti-Semitic on the other side, and that’s not the case,” Antunes told CNN.

He blamed right-wing figures saying: “The Jewish right doesn’t want to be criticized, and therefore, when criticized they say ‘We are a persecuted people, we suffered a lot… this is anti-Semitism.'”

However, the paper also apologized “to members of the Jewish community and those who may have felt offended,” saying “it was never intended to portray Israel or the Jewish religion and its believers in a less dignified manner.”

One day in Texas: Sen. George W. Bush [R]allows NYS to dump atomic wastes in earthquake area close to river

As luck would have it, U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN) convened a press conference in Washington, D.C. that very same Thursday to discuss the very same project. In Austin, the governor assured the ambassador that the dump would not be a threat to the low-income border community chosen for the site, nor would it endanger the watershed of the Rio Grande, a source of drinking and agricultural water for many thousands of Mexicans and Texans.
Sure, because, how would this ever cause a threat to the habitat? I mean, there is literally no possibility for it to ever enter the river, like... You know...
Although industry spokespersons like to refer to low-level waste as mostly "gloves and booties" used in medical facilities, the category also includes virtually all power plant waste except spent fuel rods. In fact, according to industry estimates, about 85% of low-level waste - measured by radioactivity - comes from power plants,

Democracy is dissatisfying many people around the world

Across 27 countries polled, a median of 51% are dissatisfied with how democracy is working in their country; just 45% are satisfied.
Ouch. This is a tremendous decline in their belief in democracy. What is to make out of this, beside the fact that democracy is comparably impotent when it comes to persuading people about its advantageous role model in terms of equal opportunities. I guess that people like Pete Buttigieg are right when they say that capitalism is ardently undermining the core values of our democracy, namely equal opportunities, a peaceful contribution of resources for everyone on behalf of the market, and a blooming future for descending generations thanks to mutually social participation of everyone towards it.
Most believe elections bring little change, that politicians are corrupt and out of touch and that courts do not treat people fairly. On the other hand, people are more positive about how well their countries protect free expression, provide economic

Backlash after Ilhan Omar-9/11 reference grows

The video Drumpf retweeted on Friday pulls a snippet of Omar's recent speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in which she described the 2001 attack on New York's World Trade Center as "some people did something" and includes news footage of the hijacked planes hitting the Twin Towers.
Remember: This is like sending Trump death threats after he failed to fully punish the attacker at the Unite The Right rallye. It didn't happen. Why? Because left-wingers follow by a codex of minimum decency. The right fails to grow this certain amount of decency. Therefore, Ms. Omar's life is threatened by now.
The Muslim politician also tweeted a quote from former President George W Bush, who said days after the attacks: "The people - and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!"

Private security company Blackwater to send 5,000 troops to Venezuela to topple Maduro government

Over the last several months, the sources said, Prince has sought investment and political support for such an operation from influential Drumpf supporters and wealthy Venezuelan exiles. In private meetings in the United States and Europe, Prince sketched out a plan to field up to 5,000 soldiers-for-hire on behalf of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, according to two sources with direct knowledge of Prince’s pitch.

A Venezuelan exile close to the opposition agreed but said private contractors might prove useful, in the event Maduro’s government collapses, by providing security for a new administration in the aftermath.
Shouldn't war be a thing commenced and led by governments rather than private companies who only follow their own despicable intentions?

On Duke Ellington and social activism

Ellington first rose to fame at Harlem’s “whites only” Cotton Club in the 1920s. There, the only mingling of black and white happened on the piano keyboard itself, as black performers entered through back doors and could not interact with white customers.
Ellington quietly devoted his services to the NAACP and its racial equality activities in the 1930s. Whether it was demanding that black youth have equal entrance rights to segregated dance halls or holding benefit concerts for the Scottsboro Boys, nine black adolescents falsely imprisoned for rape in 1931, Ellington used his growing fame as a prominent band leader for a greater good.

Once the civil rights movement of the 1950s began to fight for racial equality through direct-action techniques like mass protests, boycotts and sit-ins, activists in the early 1950s criticized the older Ellington. His subtle activism style had focused on benefit concerts, and not “in the streets” protests.

On Henry Kissinger's failed speech at New York University and Conservatism at colleges

1. The Bulwark:

In the ‘60s, it was the revolutionary counterculture and the rise of the New Left. Today, it is the scourge of identity politics and the attendant intersectionality, trigger warnings, among other signs of radical left dominance among students and faculty alike.
I wouldn't call it the radical left but the whimpy left. This has got nothing to do with radicalism but rather with emotionalism. You simply have to tell them that when they can't stand the heat, they should stay out of the kitchen. Something like that.
Still, you shouldn't give somebody like Milo a stage, at least not at campus. He's got nothing to do with politics but only with populism. and colleges should not be the place to promote populism. I was fine with Jordan Peterson, but Milo crosses a line of decency.

Anti-immigrant leader milita of militia arrested

Hector Balderas, New Mexico’s attorney general, said federal agents had arrested the leader, Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who had been operating under the alias Johnny Horton Jr. Mr Balderas said in a statement that Hopkins was arrested on charges of firearms possession by a felon.

The firearms charge against Hopkins is relatively minor. But it is likely the start of a deeper investigation into his activities and those of the militia, and opens the way for the authorities to bring more serious charges like kidnapping and impersonating a police officer or an employee of the United States.

Political leaders in New Mexico, a state largely controlled by Democrats, responded with fury. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said that any mistreatment of asylum-seekers on the border was “unacceptable.” The state’s two Democratic senators, Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, said in a statement that the actions of vigilante groups “cannot be tolerated.”

On the book Assange clutched onto when being arrested

Looking frail after seven years in his cramped embassy quarters, Assange emerged and pointedly held out a copy of ‘Gore Vidal: History of The National Security State (Includes Vidal on America)’.

The book immediately drew attention given Assange’s long-running battles with those who wield power and seek to protect powerful interests, and Vidal’s musings on the same topics. The U.S. Justice Department accuses Assange of conspiring with Chelsea Manning to break into a classified government computer at the Pentagon; his defenders, including whistleblower Edward Snowden, called Assange’s arrest a grave blow to press freedom.

After Assange’s copy of the book was spotted, the Real News Network posted a series of Jay’s interviews with Vidal from 2007. They cover power, public information, politics and more, and include Vidal’s assertion that President Harry Truman decided, after the Second World War, to make a ready-made enemy out of J

On depredating of oneself's dignity - and nationalism

That’s because from the earliest humans onward, we have evolved an instinct to unify in the face of an external threat. Our success on the food chain derives only secondarily from our intelligence. Our primary advantage was our ability to cooperate.

My problem with nationalism is that, left unchecked, it devolves into the spirit of emergency. By placing the logic of “us” above all, it must create thems that must be defeated. It casts about for threats to justify a cult of unity. As Orwell observed, “As nearly as possible, no nationalist ever thinks, talks, or writes about anything except the superiority of his own power unit.”

The Iranians are nationalists; the Nazis were nationalist; Maduro, Chavez, Stalin, Castro, Mussolini, the Kims: They’re all nationalists. So were Washington, Lincoln, Churchill, and de Gaulle. What differentiated the heroes from the villains was how they deployed nationalist sentiments.

Republican woman intends to run against AOC after failed deal with Amazon

“ [AOC]chose ideology over paychecks,” swannabe candidate and medical journalist Ruth Papazian, noting that Amazon vowed to create 25,000 jobs before pulling out of its deal to open a campus in Queens. “People need jobs. We don’t have economic diversity in the outer boroughs.”
Look at her picture in the article and then imagine her to tell you that you chose ideology over paychecks. Could you take her serious?
Anyway, but seriously: Amazon is known to employ people below the average payment of at least 12 Dollars or so. The warehouse conditions for employees are knowingly horrible, you cannot tell people that this was the most reasonable choice, to let Amazon create another headquarter in your borough because jobs were desperately needed. There have to be better choices, and AOC has to find them.
A daughter of Egyptian immigrants, Papazian said she would run on a platform of creating jobs, not chasing them away.

(I already thought that we had this debate about Nazis being actually left-wingers because it is called National Socialists. Even German poltiicians who, by their age (speaking of age and senilitiy), become more and more demented, made the same claim about this determining predicate in the end. This is racist, discriminating, a crima against humanity. Something only the wrost scum in the world is capable of doing without having a very bad conscience about. AOC compared to the politicians who ended the iron curtain

She is the gift that will keep on giving in a thousand soundbites. She is in their faces with the stridency of a world they loathe, almost martial in the way she articulates the multi-cultural energy of the new generation of progressives.

She for sure has got her platform for free promotion, there will always be scribes to shovel some more coal for her train.

That kind of deliberate misallocation of meaning invoked to scaremonger is part of the putrefaction of language used by demagogues through the ages. Fear of that didn’t deter Bernie Sanders, the first presidential hopeful in recent history with the balls to invoke socialism’s true principles and urgent application.

Then, almost out of nowhere, came the true slayer of inequality and plutocracy, AOC. First, to get elected, she managed the defenestration of a primary opponent backed by a complacent big city party machine. The next they knew she was sashaying along the corridors of Congress flanked by a posse... show more
