Austrian McDonald's stores now cooperate with embassy to help US tourists and expatriats to find their way

"American citizens traveling in Austria who find themselves in distress and without a way to contact the U.S. Embassy can enter – as of Wednesday, May 15, 2019 – any McDonald's in Austria, and staff will assist them in making contact with the U.S. Embassy for consular services," the announcement read.

In a statement to Independent.co.uk, McDonald’s spokesperson Wilhelm Baldia said the U.S. Consulate selected the fast-food company because of the "brand's great fame among Americans."

Because why?

Because Americans seem to be more likely to know where to find the next McDonald's than their own embassy. Or, because they are oftentimes closer than the embassy that is most often located in the capital city, but not everyone visits the country's capital city.

@Pufcorn Why so negative about it? I know that this is not the greatest example of the healthy separation of corporate interests in the state, but I guess that it is cheaper for the taxpayer to not fund multiple embassies per country upon their backs.

Also, where does it say that you have to buy their stuff in order to get a visa at their store?

@Oliver Bender I travel a lot. Hell will freeze over if I have to put my life into the hands of someone at a McDonalds halfway around the world when I can look up the number to the closest Embassy and call them directly. It is not so complicated. If you really need help you can flag down a local police officer.

Perhaps this is just me?

To be fair, it's not solely their accomplishment. It's merely a combination of indifference of the individual that grows bigger and bigger, the minority of people who have to pop pills that cause them to become obese (I know friends who suffer from chronical diseases that force them into their misery, it's nothing to joke about), and those who simply don't mind their diet enough to double-check food on any additives, and who also don't have their daily dose of fruits and vegetables. I believe that McDonald's only plays a small role in the world's obesity. I mean: I have a poor BMI too, but seldom eat at fast-food "restaurants". 😁

If I was a McDonald's employee and had the power to decide over foreigners' lives in such a way, I guess I'd have a talk with my boss about a due pay raise. :'D

If you really need help you can flag down a local police officer.

In a modern world, with a modern government, I would expect to demand a visa online, at my government's website, so that I didn't have to run to the next embassy that might be located miles away. It shouldn't be that hard, but I'm sure that a lot of money changed its possessor when this decision was felled. Still, I wonder who had this great idea.

Oh, wait - yes, the man who also serves Burger King and McDonald's when a sports team visits the White House. Of course, I forgot about this.

Speaking for some "Americans", I'm terribly embarrassed that this is a feasible idea. I hope it gets picked up by our #Comedians and were forced to deal with our "Ugly American" problem.

@Michael Rupp This book looks interesting and surely needs a remake, to update it to the current state of the art. On the other hand, one should not fully refer this book to Donnie alone, he's just the syptom of a corrupted development in a nation that made it possible to raise men like him to the highest office. Andrew Wheeler is almost worse than him; to think that soon again, companies could use asbestos in buildings despite the natural fact that it causes lung cancer... Donnie is just a puppet that is used by those who know how to control him, to infiltrate figures in departments to cause as much damage as possible.
